Hong Kong and Shenzhen
Vannessa an I went up to Hong Kong for a weekend trip 26-28 of May 2006. The main reason with the trip was to meet up with former colleagues and friends to stay in touch, but we also put in a fair bit of sightseeing.
We did a day trip to Shenzhen on the Saturday together with Patrik. I found this hkstreet site to be very helpful. We did a fair bit of shopping in the chaotic but interesting Lo Wu Commercial Center. We tried to get lunch at the Laurel Chinese Restaurant in there but even though we put down our name 11:30 we still had 20 people in front of us at 2 pm and had to give up.
After some lunch at a nearby hotel we took a taxi to Shenzhen Stock Exchange (Patrik wanted to see the place..) and then on to Minsk World, a decommissioned Russian aircraft carrier turned into a tourist attraction. Good fun to see but the exhibition is a little run down (as you'd expect since the company running the place has gone bankrupt).
After a long day in Shenzhen we rounded off the evening with some Aussie food in the happening downtown area.
Sunday we met up with old friend Guido who showed us around Kowloon. We had some excellent food and then jumped into the Hong Kong Museum of Art to see some contemporary Chinese art and get away from the heavy rains. When the day finally cleared up a bit I took Vanny up to the peak on the obligatory tram ride.
A good and intensive weekend in vibrant Hong Kong.
